Peconic Landing expansion to benefit members, community and staff

New skilled nursing and memory support suites, independent living apartments, and upgraded therapies and amenities to provide better service, care and quality of life for members

GREENPORT, N.Y. –– Peconic Landing has announced the largest expansion of its facilities, amenities and therapies in its 10-year history. The not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in Greenport expects to start construction on the approximately $45 million expansion in December 2013.

“Peconic Landing is always going to be on a journey, constantly recreating and looking for ways to improve and provide better service, better care and a better quality of life for our members,” said Robert J. Syron, Peconic Landing president and CEO. “From a construction design conducive to members’ quality of life to alternative energy ideas to make us greener, this is an exciting process that has involved the expertise of many of our members, board of trustees and staff.”

The expansion will feature 16 new private skilled nursing accommodations in a “neighborhood model,” which includes a common area with country kitchen, dining area, great room and activity area. A 16-suite memory support assisted living wing for those with cognitive impairment will be set in a similar neighborhood style.

Forty-six residential apartments ranging in size from 750 to 1,100 square feet will be added, along with expanded fitness facilities, new administrative support spaces and enhancements to the community’s educational amenities, including a technologically enhanced “smart” classroom.

The independent living addition will be attached to the existing community center and have easy access to all fitness, social and cultural amenities. The pool area will be renovated to provide greater access. Exercise facilities will be significantly increased, and a separate fitness room will be created for group exercise.

A new front entrance to the healthcare center will be created along with a new lobby/reception area, training room and administrative space. Post-acute rehabilitation services will include upgraded physical and occupational therapies.

All phases of the expansion will start simultaneously, with construction of the memory care and skilled nursing additions anticipated to take 12 months, and the residential living addition – which includes underground resident parking – approximately 14 to 16 months.

About 40-45 new jobs will be created, making Peconic Landing one of the largest employers on the North Fork of Long Island with almost 250 employees. Besides additional employment opportunities for growth, staff will have access to the fitness center and additional classes.

“The addition of roughly 50 new members brings not only fresh energy and active volunteerism to Peconic Landing and the community as a whole; the newcomers will boost the local economy as they shop, eat, explore and enjoy all the recreation and culture this region offers,” said Syron. “We’ve established a culture founded on being good neighbors, and residents and staff give generously of their time, talent and financial resources to support a myriad of local causes. The Peconic Landing May Mile and 5K, for example, is an annual multi-generational fitness event to celebrate Older Americans Month and has grown into a prominent community event that raises thousands of dollars for the local fire department.”

Peconic Landing offers a full continuum of care currently consisting of 250 residential units (109 cottages and 141 apartments), 26 enriched housing apartments (assisted living), and 44 skilled nursing accommodations. The 144-acre waterfront campus is nestled between a golf course and a winery. Peconic Landing is the only equity-based LifeCare community in the state of New York and is accredited by CCAC-CARF, the industry rating agency.
